Superomniphobic coatings

To reduce surface contamination, one can use chemical modification, which either prevents deposition of contaminants, or "self-cleans" the surface, i.e. facilitate removal of contaminants. Surfaces treated in this way are much less likely to require washing.

Superomniphobic coatings are a good possible solution for both methods. An omniphobic coating is a surface that has a low affinity both for hydrophilic and hydrophobic contaminants. This solution can significantly reduce the need for cleaning due to two factors acting simultaneously. First, superomniphobic surfaces are less prone to deposition of contaminants, since their adhesion to the surface is low. Second, just simple raining may provide self-cleaning of the surface washing away dirt. Water droplets do not linger on such a surface but roll down at minimal angles of inclination and under the wind contaminants being removed as well.

Currently existing means to apply superhydrophobic coatings to glass are based on the formation of a monolayer of perfluorocarbon chains covalently bonded to glass surface. Our solution is significantly different compared to existing analogues due to increased durability and performance characteristics (wetting angles, ease of application).

A distinctive feature of this solution is the use of compounds having several trichlorosilyl groups per perfluorocarbon chain.

This feature of the chemical structure allows achieving better performance of the coating compared to commercially available samples:

- formation of a nanostructured coating with artificial irregularities allows one to get "lotus effect" - an increase in hydrophobicity and contact angle of a nanostructured surface compared to a smooth surface of a similar chemical nature.

-strong fixation and long lifetime of the coating placed on glass achieved through the effect of cooperative binding; this means a single bond of silyl groups broken (hydrolised) do not lead to removal of the chemical agent; the broken bond may heal itself as soon as hydrolysis is reversible and the period of time it can stay close to the surface is almost limitless


Such coatings can be used at car wash or outdoors if weather is fine. A special applicator is designed to apply the coating.
